Aug 31: Larry Rohter: In the Steps of the World’s Greatest Explorer
Rohter worked as a correspondent for The New York Times in Latin America, and, served as the Times’ bureau chief in Rio, Brazil for nearly a decade. He has written a new book, Into the Amazon: The Life of Candido Rondon, Trailblazing Explorer, Scientist, Statesman and Conservationist, which was published this spring by W.W. Norton. In his talk, Rohter will regale his listeners with the story of Rondon’s perilous expedition with Teddy Roosevelt down the River of Doubt, when Roosevelt and his men barely survived, and only because of Colonel Rondon. Rohter will focus on who Rondon was, and why he remains a national hero in Brazil, and is still considered the world’s greatest explorer, ever.
